Preparing Your Home For Winter

The winter is a harsh time of year for everything, including your house. Now, before the real storms of winter hit, is the best time to prepare your home for winter's cold and damaging weather. Preparing your home for winter is an important step involved with homeownership, and all who own homes or other property should take the time to properly ready their home for winter. Failing to fully prepare the home for winter could not only lead to increased costs for wasted utility bills in the endless struggle to heat the home, but also to more and expensive summer time repairs to the home or even costs incurred from mishaps stemming from an unsafe home.

Sally on the other hand was a solar-energy-loving, die-hard Yankee fan, red-headed fire-ball that was clever enough to live amongst her straight-laced neighbors undetected. In fact, she enjoyed living amongst these uptight, yet oddly kind people.

Both of these lapses in home winterization can lead to both damage to the home or personal injury to an individual. Snow retention clips keep dangerous snow and ice packs on the roof where they can safely be distributed away by the home's drainage systems instead of dangerously falling from the roof and onto walkways and pathways around the home.

She knew that everyone in the neighborhood had been coveting the work of a local stain-glass artisan and planned on installing a window or two in their homes. But, none of them had been able to save enough money to do so. Sally also knew that everyone in the neighborhood was aware that she made the least amount of money of all of them. She was a new elementary school teacher and made only two-thirds of the average household income of the neighborhood. However, due to her amazing, secret solar panel shingles, Sally had managed to save more money than any of her neighbors.

So, the next week, Sally had Jameson, the stain-glass man, install a beautiful window above her front door. When Sally arrived home from school, she found the whole neighborhood gathered together on her front lawn staring at the new window. The moment Sally stepped out of her car, she was bombarded with questions about how she had been able to afford such a masterpiece. She vaguely answered that she found a new way to save money and slipped into the house. Sally smiled to herself as she shut the door on their puzzled faces.

The end of the week found Sally's neighbors begging to know her secret. Anything. They would do anything to know what Sally had done to save enough money from her elementary-school pittance to afford such a window. Recognizing the genuine willingness to listen and obey in the eyes of her neighbors, she explained that she had solar shingles.

In addition, the homeowner can take other steps to see that the inside of their home is well insulated. Installing specialized covers for doorframes and windowsills will help to seal in the common leaks to a house that let warm air escape. There are many ways for a family to prepare their home for winter, and none should be overlooked if possible. By preparing the home for the winter in every needful way, the family inside the home will be able to have cost effective, comfortable, and safe winter season.
