Woodworking Hints And Tips For Solving Problems With Projects

Contrary to the beliefs of many, wood is not a perfect, static building material. It may be true that some wood types have more stability than others. However, each type of wood has characteristics that would lead to woodworking problems if the carpenter does not prepare for them adequately. There are countless woodworking hints and tricks, and below are some of the most helpful.

The first hint is all about table saw safety and its importance. When a carpenter is cross cutting on a table saw top, setting of the cut length should be done using a clamped block to the fence. To avoid kicking a board back to the worker, the fence must never be directly used.

Instead, a block of wood should be clamped to the fence in front of the blade. Then, the board end will be free from the fence during the cut and once it is finished. For example, if the worker makes a block that is exactly one inch thick, he or she can set the fence scale at an inch greater than the length they are looking for.

Another guideline is utilizing tape to trap overflowing glue. The working pieces should not be stuck together using glue so as to prevent against staining from glue that overflows. This can be done by applying tape on the joint, and using a sharp knife to cut along it. This is followed by separation of the pieces, applying glue and then joining together the pieces. By doing so, overflowing glue stains the top, not the wood, and it later dries and the tape peeled.

The other vital tip involves using stair gauges as a crosscut guide. Stair gauges are mainly used to lay out stair jacks. In order to match the rise and run of a stair jack, the gauges are clamped to a carpenter square, then used to mark notches. However, such a combination presents the best crosscut guide for circular saws, should they both be placed on one tongue of a square.

A carpenter can achieve more accuracy by using a drafting square. When an accurate square is needed in the range of between two and three feet, there are limited options. Drywall squares are usually cumbersome and inaccurate. Using carpenter squares involves the nagging hassle of hooking them onto a work piece edge. Drafting squares are quite accurate and the carpenter will find himself using it nearly as often as he uses a tape measure.

Compared to clamps, hot glue holds things much better. When carpenters have to shape, cut, sand, finish or file something small, it is advisable to reach for their hot glue gun and stick the piece to a pedestal stick. Hot glue will hold virtually anything as good as any clamp or even better. When the project is done, it can be popped loose with a putty knife. However, care should be taken not to apply too much otherwise the piece may be broken or the wood torn out.

The above mentioned woodworking hints are of great use to anyone o with wood pieces. Such tips are so many, but not many of them make woodworking easier than the above.
