Dreams are very strange and often confusing. Sometimes they can be extreme and turn into nightmares. Many people think they are indecipherable and want to understand them better. This often leads to the question; "is it possible to interpret my dream meanings?"

The are lots of reasons as to why have dreams. Freud cam up with one of the most well known theories when he said that we do it so that we can experiences our unconscious desires. However, many contemporary scientists have refuted this view point. Cognitive scientist claim that dreaming is connected to evolution. They think we do it to rehearse getting out of dangerous situations. This means we will be more adept at coping with them in real life.

Another theory is that dreaming makes us wiser. If we remembered every image form our waking lives then our brains would become jammed, so dreams sort through the information we should retain and discards the rest. This makes us wiser in our real lives because we are less distracted by useless information.

Others say that dreaming is like cleaning up your computer. The brain connects information in a certain way but it can always be made more efficient. Our brain works more randomly while we sleep creating new information pathways. This helps the brain to get rid of inefficient links and so it works in a more streamlined way.

Certain doctors have said that dreams help us to confront emotions that our rational mind can't face up to. While we're asleep, we can take on these problems by seeing them as images. It's a bit like therapy. The other contemporary theory is that our dreams have no particular meaning. They are merely the result of the brain being active with our consciousness giving it direction.

When trying to work out the meaning of our dreams, we need to remember them as fully as possible. If they seem vague to us, then it is extremely difficult to comprehend them. Keep a paper and pen by your bed because then you can write down the content of your dream when you wake-up. Try to make a note of as much information as possible, regardless of how silly it might seem.

Avoid trying to give your dreams a plot. This might seem like the logical thing to do but it blurs them, making them harder to understand. When analysing them, you need to be aware that they relate to your particular life and circumstances. There are no stock answers so dream dictionaries cannot help you. It's up to you to decipher the dream's true meaning.

Avoid over analysing your dreams. Try to see the most blatant connections to the real world. Anything that looks like your current situation should be dealt with first, as well as any events which may have actually happened to you.

Is it possible to interpret my dream meanings? Yes, but it's up to you to draw conclusions. It's not only about putting in the effort though, you need to be honest with yourself as well.
